Fiskar's is one of the oldest companies in the world. It began as an ironworks in the small village of Fiskars, Finland, in 1649. Yet, in 1992 all production had stopped in in the beautiful, historic town, and it was economically dead. Fiskars sought out artisans, designers, and artists and invited them to live and work in the village. This transformed the town into a much acclaimed center for Finnish art and design, and it is now a popular tourist destination.
The company's trademark orange color came about by accident. When their iconic scissors were designed in 1967, the prototype was made from resin left over from making an orange juicer. Fortunately, there was a vote, and orange defeated black by 9 to 7.
